TC 3 - Bubble City / Open City

For this assignment I have been inspired by the project SUPERBIAsuburbia, a project developed for the 12.th International Venice Biennial by a team of romanian Architects and Artists.

http://superbiasuburbia.wordpress.com/

The project focuses on the recent urban sprawl that has been going on around Romanian cities, fueled by the bubble of the real-estate market up until 2007 and by people's need for individuality, comfort and intimacy, the dream of the "house with a garden".

(All of the photos have been downloaded from the SUPERBIA website and belong to their respective owners!)

The houses represented in these photos are no doubt bubbles, I would even say more than just bubbles but really islands in the middle of nowhere. Disconnected in every possible way (no sewage, no electricity, no roads, etc.) they are the product of certain desires of people, combined with a lack of urban planning and regulation, and land speculation.

As for the open moment that should happen in between these projects, it is missing completely. So far even roads between these houses are missing, thus an opportunity for a project that could create an openness between these bubbles would be most welcome.

I believe the open moment between these projects is sadly, the "cvasi" public space of shopping malls, bubbles like these on their own, where people, who live in these "bubbles", go to another "bubble" to meet, in the lack of proper public spaces.
