Building Play Camp T&T

SITE INFO

The site of Tour & Taxis was used before as a railroad warehouse and a customs centre. It was abandoned in the end of the eighties, beginning of the nineties.
After that numerous plans were made up for this site and although there is an approved 'richtschema' (masterplan) for the area and a few of the historical buildings have already been renovated, the terrain is still a 'terrain vague' for the biggest part.
The future developments on this site will have a significant impact on the surrounding quarters. Therefore the functional and spatial unity realized through the new design will be primordial. The site shouldn't become an isolated enclave.

USE / USER(S)

The Building Play Camp is a place where (Brussels) children (age 8 till 13) in summertime can come together to build a camp, under the supervision of youth leaders.
The aim of the project is to provide an easy-access recreational activity that invites the children to think and reflect in a playful way about the huge ‘void’ in their living area and about the possible future function of this place for them. Through the project the organiser tries to involve the local children in the future plans for the site of T&T, the findings from the project are provided to the decision-makers and designers.

ORGANISER

Yota! is the name for the participation projects by the NGO JES ('Jeugd en Stad Brussel'=Youth and the City Brussels). The NOG was founded in 1984 to support the Flemish Community Youth Work in the Brussels Capital Region.
JES is a part of the ‘Steering Committee Temporary Use Tour and Taxis’ organized in the framework of the participatory process for the redevelopment project for the site. For the organization of the Building Play Camp the JES collaborators are working together with youth leaders from the neighbourhood itself (in collaboration with BRAVVO): this allows for a easier and more profound contact with the - often immigrant - children that come and play at the Camp.

TIMEFRAME
The building camp was first organised in 2007. It was repeated in 2008 and 2009. In 2010 the format was changed and it was now called 'Urban Sports Centre'
